About

James Lord
I was born in 1970 on the Isle of Wight and spent an idylic childhood in Yarmouth sculling around the harbour, sailing Scows on the River Yar and spending long hot summer days on Compton Beach building castles with the black sand and playing in the waves. I studied Graphic Design at Bournemouth college of Art and then London College of Printing where I graduated with a BA Hons degree in Graphic Communication. The following 10 years I lived and worked in London as a graphic designer before heading back to the Isle of Wight to set-up a small design company. This September, after a very long break, I'm going back to university to study for an MA in Fine Art at UCA Farnham.
My work current work is geometric, landscapes and seascapes. Painted in layers of acrylic using palette knives, set in frames I make in my studio.
I try to be a sustainable as possible painting on reclaimed OSB, plywood, MDF, particle board, driftwood washed up along the Island coastline, skip finds, offcuts, old furniture. My friends Pete an James at Superior Bespoke carpentry has been very kind in donating all their offcuts giving a range of new surfaces to paint on.
Love of the water runs deep and I get inspiration looking back at the coastline from my surfboard or racing my classic XOD yacht Annabel, swims at Freshwater bay and walks along beaches, coastal paths and across the downs.
